You do not need pressurized CO₂ or blinding lights to grow a lush tank. These plants are bulletproof in a low-tech setup with a modest light and a regular fertilizer routine.
Attach-to-hardscape (no planting needed): Anubias and Java fern — tie or glue them to wood or rock and don't bury the rhizome (burying it rots the plant). Nearly indestructible and low light is fine.
Mosses: Java moss and similar — great for carpets, breeding cover, and softening hardscape.
Rooted, easy growers: Cryptocoryne (expect "crypt melt" when first planted — it bounces back), Amazon sword and Vallisneria (heavy root feeders — give them root tabs), water wisteria and hornwort (fast stem plants that soak up excess nutrients and help outcompete algae).
Keep it simple: a modest light on a timer (6–8 hours), root tabs for the root feeders plus an all-in-one liquid fert for the rest, and patience — low-tech grows slower but steadier. Fast growers early on are your best algae insurance because they consume the nutrients algae wants.
Check any plant's light and care needs on its species database page before you buy.
Your turn: post your light (model or wattage), tank size, and substrate, and we'll suggest a low-tech plant list that'll actually thrive in it.
