Breeding guides

Breeding Guides collects real spawn reports and plant propagation write-ups from Underground Aquarium Society members, grouped by species. Anyone can read them, signed in or not.

What are breeding guides?

Breeding guides are write-ups from Society members who have actually bred a fish or propagated a plant. Each one comes from a breeding report the member submitted to their club and that was approved. The member chose to share it publicly.

They're organized by species, so one guide page can hold several members' reports for the same fish. Find them under Breeding Guides in the menu (under Learn) or in the site footer.

How do I find a breeding guide for a species?

1. Open Breeding Guides.
2. Browse the cards, sorted A to Z by species name. Each card shows a photo (when a report has one), the species name and how many guides it has, for example "3 guides".
3. Tap a card to open that species' guide page.

There's no search box on the breeding guides page. You can also get there from a species care page: when a species has at least one report, its page shows a How to breed [species] box with the number of reports "from members who have spawned them". Tap it to open the guide.

What's on a species breeding guide page?

• All breeding guides: back to the list.
• A label saying Breeding guide for fish, or Propagation guide for plants.
• The species name and how many reports there are, for example "2 reports from hobbyists who've bred [species]".
• [Species] care guide: tank size, water and diet: a link to the species care page, when we have one for that species.
• The reports, newest first.

What's in each breeding report?

Each report shows:

• The breeder: their name, linked to their profile. If the breeder's profile can't be shown, it says "A Society member".
• Their club: linked to the club page if the club is public, otherwise just the name.
• The date: the date the fish spawned (or the plant was propagated), or the date the report was submitted if no date was given.
• The write-up: how they did it, such as tank setup, water parameters, conditioning and what triggered the spawn. If they didn't write anything, it says "No write-up provided."
• Photos: up to 4. Tap a photo to open it full size.

Are plants included in breeding guides?

Yes. Reports from the plant program (HAP) appear too, marked Propagation guide with a leaf icon when there's no photo. Fish reports come from the fish program (BAP).

How do I get my breeding report published as a guide?

You need to be a member of the Underground Aquarium Society and submit a breeding report through your club.

1. Open your club's award submission form.
2. Choose Fish (BAP) or Plants (HAP) and fill in the species, the date and How you did it. You can add up to 4 photos.
3. Tick "Share my write-up and photos as a public breeding guide once it's approved." (Leave it unticked to keep the report private to the club.)
4. Tap Submit for review.

A club officer reviews the report. Once it's approved, your write-up and photos appear in Breeding Guides, credited to your profile. For the full submission process see Spawn logs and submissions and the Breeder Award Program. To join, see Joining the Society.

Can I remove my report from the public breeding guides?

There's no button to un-share a report after it's published. Email support@undergroundaquarium.com with the species and your club, and we'll help.

Can anyone submit a breeding guide?

No. Guides only come from approved Society breeding reports where the member chose to share publicly. If you're not a Society member but want to share how you bred a fish, you can post in the forums (see Starting a forum thread), or share a short clip on the species page (see Breeding videos).

Why is there no breeding guide for my fish?

Nobody has shared an approved report for that species yet. If you've bred it and you're a Society member, yours could be the first. The species care page still shows how the species breeds under Breeding (for example Egg-scatterer or Livebearer). See Reading a species page.

Common problems

The breeding guides page says "No breeding guides yet." No reports have been shared publicly yet. When Society members share their approved spawn reports, they'll appear there.

My report was approved but isn't in Breeding Guides. Check that you ticked "Share my write-up and photos as a public breeding guide once it's approved." when you submitted. If you didn't, or it still isn't showing, email support@undergroundaquarium.com with the species and your club.

The species page has no "How to breed" box but a guide exists. The box only appears when the guide is filed under the same species as the care page. Email support@undergroundaquarium.com if a guide seems to be under the wrong species.

I can't open the club link on a report. The club name is only a link when the club is public.

There's no care guide link on a breeding guide page. We don't have a species care page matching that guide yet. Plants, for example, aren't in the species library.
