Getting started

Signing in and passwords

You log in with your email address and password, or with Google. This guide covers logging in and out, resetting a forgotten password and changing your password.

How do I log in?

  1. Go to Log in. On a computer, click Sign In at the top right. On a phone, tap Sign in on the bottom bar, or open the menu and tap Sign in.
  2. If you signed up with Google, click Continue with Google.
  3. Otherwise, enter your Email and Password and click Log in. The button shows "Logging in…" while it works.

You log in with your email address, not your username.

Where do I go after logging in?

If the site sent you to Log in from a page (for example you tapped Messages or tried to reply to a thread), you go straight back to that page. If you went to the Log in page yourself, from the Sign In link at the top, you land on the Feed.

If you're already signed in and open the Log in page, it skips the form and sends you on automatically.

Which pages need me to be signed in?

Visiting these while signed out takes you to Log in first, then back to the page:

Other pages, like the Classifieds, Feed and Forums, can be read signed out. You are asked to log in only when you try to post, reply, message or save something.

I forgot my password. How do I reset it?

  1. On the Log in page, click Forgot your password? under the Password box. This opens Reset password.
  2. Enter your Email and click Send reset link. The button shows "Sending…".
  3. The page says: "If an account exists for (your email), a reset link is on its way. Check your inbox (and your spam folder)."
  4. Open the email and click the link. It opens Set a new password.
  5. Enter your New password and type it again in Confirm new password. It must be at least 8 characters.
  6. Click Update password. You are signed in and taken to your Dashboard.

For privacy, the Reset password page always shows the same message, whether or not an account exists for that email. So the message alone doesn't prove the email went out.

How do I change my password?

  1. While signed in, go to Password. You can find it in the Your account menu on any settings page (a side menu on a computer, a swipeable row of buttons on a phone). It is described as "Change how you sign in".
  2. Enter your New password and type it again in Confirm new password. At least 8 characters.
  3. Click Update password.

You don't need to enter your current password. When it saves, you are taken to your Dashboard. The page heading reads Set a new password whether you came from a reset email or from settings.

What are the password rules?

  • When you create an account, the password must be at least 6 characters.
  • When you reset or change a password, the new one must be at least 8 characters.
  • Both boxes on the Set a new password page must match exactly.

There are no other rules enforced by the forms, but a longer password that you don't use on other sites is safest.

I signed up with Google. Do I have a password?

No, and you don't need one. Use Continue with Google on the Log in page. If you'd like a password as well, sign in with Google and set one at Password (at least 8 characters). After that you can log in either way. See Signing in with Google.

How do I sign out?

  • On a computer: click your name and photo at the top right, then Sign out at the bottom of the menu.
  • On a phone: tap Me on the bottom bar to open your Dashboard, then tap Sign out under the shortcut buttons.

Signing out takes you to the home page, and pressing Back won't reopen signed in pages. Signing out can also end your session on other devices, so you may need to log in again there.

How long do I stay signed in?

You stay signed in on that browser until you sign out, clear your browser's cookies, or your session can't be renewed. The site refreshes your session in the background as you use it, so you normally won't be asked to log in again on a device you use regularly.

Why was I sent to "Account scheduled for deletion" when I logged in?

If you asked us to delete your account, logging in with your email and password during the waiting period takes you to a page titled Account scheduled for deletion. It shows the date your account will be permanently deleted and lets you cancel and reactivate it, or sign out. See Deleting your account.

Common problems

"Invalid login credentials" The email and password don't match an account. Check for typos and for Caps Lock, make sure you're using your email address and not your username, and try the address you signed up with. If you signed up with Google, use Continue with Google instead. If you still can't get in, reset your password.

"Email not confirmed" You haven't clicked the confirmation link we sent when you registered. Find that email (check spam) and click it. See Confirming your email.

The reset email never arrived. Wait a few minutes and check your spam, junk and promotions folders. Make sure you typed the address you signed up with. If you signed up with Google, there may be no password to reset: just use Continue with Google. If you request several reset links quickly you may be asked to wait before trying again. When several arrive, use the newest one.

"This reset link has expired or was already used. Request a new one from the login page." Reset links work once and don't last forever. Go to Reset password and send a new one, then use the newest email.

Clicking the reset link just took me to the Log in page. The link couldn't be used (it was already used, expired, or was opened in a way that broke it). The page doesn't show a message about it. Request a new link from Reset password and click it straight from the email.

"Password must be at least 8 characters." New passwords need 8 or more characters. Make it longer and click Update password again.

"Passwords do not match." The two boxes are different. Retype the same password in both.

I log in, but a moment later I look signed out. Your browser may be blocking cookies for our site, which are needed to keep you signed in. Allow cookies for undergroundaquarium.com, or try a different browser. Private or incognito windows sign you out when you close them.

I don't have access to my email anymore. You can still log in with your password (or Google) as normal. If you can't log in and can't receive a reset email, email support@undergroundaquarium.com from any address with your username and we'll help.
