A highly toxic nitrogen compound released by fish waste, uneaten food, and decay.

Ammonia is the first and most dangerous stage of the nitrogen cycle and harms fish even at very low levels, damaging gills and burning skin. In a healthy, cycled tank beneficial bacteria convert it to nitrite within hours, so any reading above zero signals a problem with your cycle, overstocking, or overfeeding.
