The relatively harmless end product of the nitrogen cycle that accumulates over time.

Nitrate is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite, but it still stresses fish and fuels algae when it climbs too high. Hobbyists keep it in check with regular water changes and live plants, which use nitrate as fertilizer.
