Nitrite

A toxic compound produced as bacteria break down ammonia, forming the second stage of the nitrogen cycle.

Nitrite interferes with a fish's ability to carry oxygen in its blood, so even small amounts are dangerous. Detectable nitrite usually means a tank is still cycling or that its bacteria colony has been disrupted.
