Editing your profile

You edit your profile on Your profile. Your photo saves the moment you pick it, and everything else saves when you click Save.

How do I edit my profile?

1. Go to Your profile.
2. Click Edit profile (top right of the header card).
3. The form opens right under your name. Change any of these fields: Username, Full name, Bio, Location, Website.
4. Click Save. The button shows Saving… while it works.

When it saves, the form closes and the header shows your new details. Click Cancel to close the form without saving anything.

You must be signed in. If you aren't, you'll be sent to log in first.

Username

Your Username is your @handle and your profile address (/u/your-username).

• Letters, numbers and underscores only. No spaces, dashes, dots or other symbols.
• It must be unique. Nobody else can have the same one.
• The form notes that you can change your username once every 30 days, so pick carefully.

If you type a space or symbol, you'll see: "Error: Username can only contain letters, numbers, and underscores, no spaces or other symbols."

When you change your username, your public profile moves to the new address and the old address stops working. Your posts, tanks, listings and followers all stay with you.

Full name (your display name)

Full name is the name shown in big type on your profile and next to your posts. It's optional.

• If you fill it in, people see it as your display name, with your @username underneath.
• If you leave it blank, your username is shown instead.
• Your initials (first letters of the first two words) are used as your photo until you add one.

You don't have to use your real name. Anything friendly works.

Bio

Bio is a few lines about you and your tanks. It's optional and shows near the top of your public profile. Line breaks you type are kept.

A bio of around 40 characters or more also makes your profile eligible to appear in search engines like Google, and the start of your bio is used as the profile's description there. If you'd rather keep your profile out of search results, keep your bio short (and see Privacy and your data for the other things that affect this).

Location

Location is free text, like "Sacramento, CA" or "North Texas". It's optional. It appears with a map pin on your public profile and on Your profile.

This field is only for your profile. It doesn't change where your classified ads show up. Each ad has its own area. See Choosing your area.

Website

Website is optional. Type an address like yourclub.org or https://yourclub.org.

• On your public profile it shows as a link without the "https://" or "www." part.
• If you leave off "https://", it's added for you when someone clicks.
• Clicking it opens the site in a new tab.

How do I add or change my profile photo?

1. Go to Your profile.
2. Click your photo (a camera icon appears when you hover), or click Add photo (or Change if you already have one) under it.
3. Pick an image from your device.

The photo saves right away. You don't need to click Save. You'll see Photo saved under it for a couple of seconds.

What happens to my photo

• It's cropped to a square from the center, so keep your subject in the middle.
• It's shrunk to at most 512 by 512 pixels and saved as a JPG.
• Accepted types: JPG, PNG, WebP, and HEIC/HEIF (iPhone photos).

How do I remove my profile photo?

On Your profile, click the small trash can icon next to Change under your photo. You'll see Photo removed and your initials take its place. Nothing else is needed.

Can I change my email address?

There's no setting to change your email address yourself. Your email is shown only to you, on Your profile and on Account & data. To change it, email support@undergroundaquarium.com from your current address and tell us the new one.

Can I change my password here?

Passwords are changed on a separate page: Password. See Signing in and passwords.

What does each field look like to other people?

Your email address is never shown publicly. To see the result, click View public profile on Your profile. See Your public profile.

Are there length limits on profile fields?

The form doesn't set character limits on Full name, Bio, Location or Website. Keep them reasonable: very long names get cut off with "…" in tight spots like follower lists and headers.

The one strict rule is the Username format (letters, numbers and underscores only).

Common problems

"Error: Username can only contain letters, numbers, and underscores…" Remove spaces, dashes, dots, emoji and accented letters from Username. For example, "reef-keeper" won't work but "reef_keeper" will.

An error mentioning "duplicate key" when I save. Someone already has that username. Try a different one, for example add a number or underscore.

I changed my username and my old link is broken. That's expected. The profile address follows your username. Share your new link, which you can open with View public profile.

"Couldn't read that photo. Try a JPG or PNG." Your browser couldn't open that file. This happens most often with iPhone HEIC photos in browsers that can't read HEIC. Save or export the photo as a JPG (or take a screenshot of it) and try again. Very large or unusual image files can cause this too.

"Upload failed." or another error under my photo. Check your connection and try again. If it keeps failing, try a smaller JPG. Still stuck? Email support@undergroundaquarium.com.

My photo is cropped badly. Photos are cropped to a square from the center. Crop the photo on your device first so the part you want is centered, then upload it again.

The Edit profile button disappeared. It hides while the form is open. Click Save or Cancel to close the form and it comes back.

My changes didn't save after I clicked away. Only the photo saves automatically. For the other fields you must click Save before leaving the page.

My new name still shows the old one in the top bar. Refresh the page. If it still shows the old name, sign out and back in.
