Finding events

The Events page lists upcoming aquarium events across the US: society and club meetups, fish and frag swaps, auctions, expos and shop events. Anyone can browse, signed in or not.

Where is the events page?

Go to Events. On a computer it's under More in the main menu (in the Community group). On a phone, it's in the menu under Events. There's also an Events link in the site footer.

What does the events list show?

Events are listed soonest first. Each card shows:

• A picture: the event's cover image, or, if there isn't one, a colored date card with the month, day and weekday plus a label guessed from the title: Auction, Swap, Show, Meetup or Event.
• Date and time, shown in the event's own local time.
• Title.
• Host: the shop's name, "Underground Aquarium Society," or "Community event" for events posted by members.
• Where: venue, city and state, Online for online events, or Location TBA if no place was given.
• The first two lines of the description.

How do I find events near me?

1. On Events, click Find events near me. It shows "Locating..." while it works.
2. Allow your browser to use your location when asked.
3. The list re-sorts by distance, closest first, and each in-person event shows how far away it is (for example "4.2 mi away" or "37 mi away"). A "Sorted by distance" note appears.

Online events, and in-person events that don't have a map location yet, are listed after the nearby ones. Click clear next to "Sorted by distance" to go back to date order. Your location is only used in your browser to sort the list.

Why doesn't an event show a distance?

Distance only shows for in-person events that have been placed on the map. Map locations are worked out automatically from the address in the background, so a brand-new or just-edited event may not have one yet. An event needs at least a street address or a city to be placed. Online events never show a distance.

How long do events stay on the events page?

Events stay on the list until about 12 hours after they start, then drop off. The event's own page keeps working for anyone with the link.

Can I search or filter events by date or state?

Not currently. The events page offers date order (the default) and Find events near me. To look further ahead, scroll the list; everything upcoming is on one page.

What's on an event page?

• Back link: All events (or Club events for Society events).
• Edit event, if you're allowed to edit it (see Editing and deleting events).
• The cover image, or the Underground Aquarium party tank picture if there isn't one.
• Title and host. Shop hosts link to their store page, and Society events link to the Society.
• Share button.
• When: the full date and start time, the end time if set, and for in-person events the time zone (for example "Pacific time").
• Where: the venue and full address, Location to be announced, or Online event with a join link if the host added one.
• Description.
• Get directions, for events with a location.
• RSVP box: how many people are going, plus I'm going and Interested buttons. See RSVP to events.

What time zone are event times shown in?

Times are shown in the event's own time zone, so a 9:30 AM auction in Ohio reads 9:30 AM wherever you're viewing from. In-person event pages add a label like "Eastern time." The events list and online event pages don't show a time zone label, so check the event page if you're joining from another time zone. Events without a saved time zone are shown in Pacific time.

How do I get directions to an event?

On an in-person event page with an address, click Get directions. It opens the location in a map in a new tab.

How do I share an event?

Click Share on the event page. On a phone, your share menu opens. On a computer, the link is copied and the button briefly says Link copied, so you can paste it anywhere.

Do old event links still work?

Yes. Links from the previous version of the site (addresses starting with /event/) take you to the same event if it's still published, or to the events page if it isn't. The old event submission page goes to the new Submit an event form.

What if there are no events?

The page says "No upcoming events yet" and "Be the first to put one on the map." Click Submit an event to post one. See Posting an event.

Where do I find local aquarium club meetings?

Clubs and the Society post meetings on Events. Use Find events near me and look for meetups. See Clubs for what happened to the old club directory.

Common problems

"Couldn't get your location, check that you allowed the permission." Your browser blocked location access. Allow location for undergroundaquarium.com in your browser or phone settings, then click Find events near me again.

"Your browser doesn't support location." Your browser can't share location. Try a different browser, or just browse in date order.

An event I was looking at disappeared from the list. It started more than about 12 hours ago, or the host removed it from the public list or deleted it. Old links to a deleted event stop working.

The event time looks wrong. The time is shown in the event's local time zone. If the host set the wrong zone, they can fix it with Edit event.
