Posting to the feed

Feed posts are quick updates: a photo of a new fish, a question, a tank milestone. They appear in the Feed for everyone and on your profile's Feed tab. You need to be signed in to post, like or comment.

How do I post to the feed?

1. Sign in and open the Feed. On a phone you can also tap the + in the bottom bar and choose Post to the feed, which opens the feed with the box ready to type in.
2. In Create a post ("Share a photo, a question or what's new in your tanks"), type in the box that asks "What's happening in your tanks," followed by your first name.
3. To add photos, tap Add photos and choose up to 4.
4. Tap Post.

Your post appears at the top of the feed right away. You can also post from the Feed tab of your own profile.

What are the limits on a feed post?

• Text: up to 2,000 characters. If you go over, the hint under the box shows how many characters over you are (for example "35 characters over") and Post stays greyed out until you trim it.
• Photos: up to 4 per post.
• You need something: either some text or at least one photo. With neither, the hint says "Write something or add a photo to post".

Feed posts are plain text. Markdown formatting isn't supported here (it only works in the forums), but line breaks you type are kept.

How do photos work in feed posts?

• Tap Add photos and pick one or more images. After the first, the button shows your count, for example Photos 2/4, and it stops accepting more at 4. If you pick more than you have room for, only the first ones are added.
• Tap the X on a thumbnail to remove it before posting.
• Photos upload only when you tap Post, so if you abandon a post nothing is left behind.
• Photos are converted to JPEG and resized (to at most 2000 pixels on the longest side) before upload. iPhone HEIC photos are supported.

In the feed, one photo shows full width; two, three or four show in a neat grid. Tap a photo to view it full screen.

Who can see my feed post?

Everyone. The hint under the box says "Posting to everyone as" and your name. Posts show in the Everyone tab, in the Following tab of people who follow you, on your profile's Feed tab and on the post's own page. There's no private or friends-only option. People you've blocked, and people who've blocked you, don't see your posts.

How do I edit a feed post?

1. Tap ... (More options) on your post.
2. Tap Edit post.
3. Change the text (still up to 2,000 characters).
4. Tap Save, or Cancel to keep the original.

Edited posts show "Edited" after the time. Only the text can be changed; photos can't be added, removed or swapped after posting. If you save with no changes, nothing happens. You can't save an empty post unless it has photos. To change photos, delete the post and post it again.

How do I delete a feed post?

1. Tap ... (More options) on your post.
2. Tap Delete post.
3. Confirm "Delete this post?".

The post disappears from the feed and its page stops working. This can't be undone. Our team can also remove posts that break the community rules.

Activity items (a tank you shared, a listing, a trophy) aren't posts and can't be deleted from the feed. To remove one, change the thing itself: make the tank private, delete the listing, and so on.

How do likes work?

• Tap Like (the heart) under any item. It turns coral. Tap again to remove your like.
• Double-tap a photo in a post to like it. Double-tapping never removes a like.
• The like count appears above the buttons. Tap it to see Likes with everyone who liked it, each linking to their profile. Close it with the X, by tapping outside, or with Escape.

You can like posts and every kind of activity item, including forum discussions.

How do I comment on a feed item?

1. Tap Comment. The comments open under the item with the box ready.
2. Type in Write a comment…. Comments can be up to 1,000 characters.
3. Press Enter or tap the send arrow. Press Shift and Enter together for a new line.

If there are no comments yet you'll see "No comments yet. Start the conversation." Comments are plain text. Forum discussions don't take feed comments; their Reply button takes you to the thread instead.

How do I reply to a comment?

1. Tap Reply under the comment.
2. The box shows "Replying to" and their name, and starts with their @username if they have one.
3. Type and send.

Replies sit one level under the comment they answer. When a comment has more than 2 replies, only the latest 2 show, with View 1 more reply or View N more replies above them. Tap the X next to "Replying to" to cancel.

You can also tap Like under any comment. Its like count shows as a small heart on the corner of the comment.

Who can delete comments?

• You can delete your own comments on anything.
• You can delete any comment left on your own post or item.
• Our team can delete any comment.

Tap the small trash icon on the comment and confirm "Delete this comment?". If a comment that had replies is deleted, its replies stay and move up to show as regular comments. Comments can't be edited, so delete and re-post if you need to fix one.

How do I share a post?

• Tap Share. On a phone this opens your share sheet (Messages, email and so on). On a computer it copies the link and shows "Link copied".
• Or tap ... (More options) then Copy link.

For a post, the link goes to its own page. For activity items, it goes to the tank, listing or thread.

What notifications do feed posts create?

When someone likes your post, tank, listing or comment, you get a like notification. When someone comments on your post or replies to your comment, you get a comment notification. You can switch these off separately under Feed likes and Feed comments in your notification settings. See Notifications.

How do I report or block from the feed?

Tap ... (More options) on someone else's item:

• Report (posts only) lets you pick a reason (Spam, Scam or fraud, Prohibited or illegal, Offensive or inappropriate, Misleading or inaccurate or Other), add details in "Anything else? (optional)" and tap Send report. You'll see "Thanks, this has been sent to our moderators." If you haven't picked a reason you'll see "Pick a reason."
• Block hides their items from your feed immediately. You won't see each other's posts or comments, and they can't message you, comment on your posts or follow you. They aren't told.

There's no report button on individual comments. For a bad comment, block the person, delete it if it's on your own post, or email support@undergroundaquarium.com with a link. See Reporting content and Blocking people.

Common problems

The Post button is greyed out. Add some text or a photo, or trim your text if the hint says you're over 2,000 characters.

A photo won't upload. The error appears under the box. For iPhone photos your browser can't read, the message suggests setting Settings › Camera › Formats › Most Compatible on your iPhone, or sharing the photo to yourself first so it comes through as a JPEG.

Add photos is greyed out. You already have 4 photos on this post.

I want to change the photos on a post. Photos can't be edited. Delete the post and post it again with the right photos.

My comment won't send. Comments can't be empty and stop at 1,000 characters. If you're signed out, tap Sign in under the comments first.

"Couldn't like that." The like didn't save, usually a connection problem. Try again in a moment.
