Reading a store page

Every shop in the directory has its own page at an address like /stores/shop-name. Anyone can read it without signing in. This guide walks through each part, top to bottom, and what's different when you're signed in or when the shop is run by its owner.

What's at the top of a store page?

• A back link. "More fish stores in [city]" takes you to that city's page. Shops with no city show "All fish stores" instead.
• The shop name, and a heart on the right. The heart favorites the shop, and the number beside it is how many people follow it (hidden when nobody does yet). See Favoriting and following stores.
• The address (or just the town, if we don't have a street address).
• Stars. The average rating out of 5 with the number of reviews. Tap the stars to jump down to the reviews. Five dim stars mean the shop has no reviews yet.
• Owner managed, with a green check, if someone from the shop has claimed the page.
• Specialty tags, such as saltwater, plants or dry goods.

Where do I find the phone number, website and directions?

In the contact box. On a phone it's near the top of the page, right under the name. On a wider screen it's in the right-hand column and stays in view as you scroll.

• Get directions opens Google Maps in a new tab with the shop's address (or its name and town if we have no street address).
• The phone number. Tap it to call on a phone.
• The website. Opens the shop's own site in a new tab.
• Hours, exactly as the shop or our listing has them.

If none of these are known, the box says "No phone or hours listed yet."

How do I check a store's hours?

Regular hours are shown in the contact box and again under Good to know, in the question "What are [shop]'s hours?". They're written as plain text, for example "Mon-Sat 11am-7pm, Sun 12-5", so read them the way the shop wrote them.

If hours aren't listed, Good to know says "Hours aren't listed yet. Call [number] before you go." (or "Check with the shop before you go." when there's no phone number).

Does the page show if a store is open now?

No. The site doesn't work out whether a shop is open or closed at this moment. It shows the regular hours as written plus any Special hours coming up. Stock and hours at small shops change often, so if you're driving a long way, call first.

What are Special hours?

Shops that manage their page can add holiday closures and one-off hours. Upcoming ones show under Special hours below the contact box, one line per date, for example:

• Thu, Nov 27 Closed · Thanksgiving
• Sat, Dec 20 Open 10am to 2pm

A day marked closed says Closed, with the shop's note after it if they added one. A day with different hours shows the shop's note, or just "Special hours" if they didn't write one. Only today and future dates are shown, and each one disappears once the day has passed. If the shop has none coming up, the section isn't shown at all.

What does Owner managed mean?

Owner managed (with a green check) means someone from the shop claimed the page and our team approved it. They can update hours, add photos, post updates and reply to reviews, so the details are more likely to be current. Near the bottom of the contact column you'll see "This store is managed by its owner."

The same green check appears on the shop's card in the directory.

What does it mean if a store isn't claimed?

An unclaimed page was built from public listings, so it may only have a name, a town and sometimes a phone number. Nobody from the shop is maintaining it yet. Instead of the owner notice, you'll see Own this store? with a Claim it button. If you run the shop, see Claiming your store.

Unclaimed pages still take reviews, stock sightings and favorites, and you can still suggest fixes.

What's the description at the top of the page?

If the shop has written a description, it appears first. Most unclaimed pages don't have one, so we write a short paragraph from what we know, for example the town, the address, what the shop is known for (from its tags), a nudge to call ahead and the names of the closest other fish stores with distances.

What is Spotted in stock?

Spotted in stock is where shoppers say what they saw on the shelves, like "Big batch of cherry shrimp, $4 each." It's written by customers, not the shop, and shows sightings from the last 60 days (the newest 20), each with who posted it and how long ago ("5m ago", "3h ago", "yesterday", "12 days ago"). Stock moves fast, so newer is better.

When there are none: "Nothing spotted yet. Be the first to say what's in the tanks." To add your own, see Suggesting store fixes and sightings.

Where are the store's photos?

If the shop's owner has added photos (storefront, tanks, livestock), they appear in a grid under Photos. Tap one to open it full size in a new tab. Only the shop's owner can add photos. If there are none, the section isn't shown.

What is From the shop?

From the shop is the shop's own news: restocks, sales and events, posted by the owner. Each update shows an optional title, the date, the text and up to 4 photos, newest first. If the shop has never posted, the section doesn't appear. Follow the shop (tap the heart) to get a notification whenever they post.

How do reviews and ratings work on a store page?

The Reviews section shows the count in its heading, for example "Reviews (12)", and the average (like "4.3 / 5") on the right. Each review shows the reviewer's name, their stars, the date ("· Edited" if they changed it) and what they wrote. If the owner replied, their answer appears under the review as Owner's response. Reviews are listed newest first.

With no reviews, it says "No reviews yet, be the first to leave one." Signed out, you'll see "Sign in to leave a review." For everything about writing, editing and deleting reviews, see Writing a store review.

What's in Good to know?

Good to know about [shop] answers the questions people usually ask:

• Where is it? The full address, with a Get directions link.
• What are its hours? The listed hours, or a note that they aren't listed yet.
• What does it sell? Shown when the shop's tags include saltwater, freshwater, plants, shrimp or pond. It describes what fish keepers list it for.
• What other aquarium stores are near it? Up to 4 shops within 30 miles, with distances.

What are On the map and Other fish stores nearby?

On the map shows the shop as a gold pin with nearby shops as green pins. Tap a pin for the name and distance. It only appears when we know the shop's location.

Other fish stores nearby lists up to 4 other shops within 30 miles as cards with stars, address, phone and distance. All in [city] takes you to the city page.

What changes when I'm signed in?

Signed in, you can tap the heart to follow the shop, post in Spotted in stock, leave or edit your review, send a Suggest a fix report and use Claim it. Signed out, each of these shows a "Sign in" link instead.

If you manage the shop, you'll also see a box that says You manage this shop with Open your shop dashboard, a Post an update button in From the shop, a Respond link on reviews, and a note that you can't review your own shop.

What is the OpenStreetMap note at the bottom?

Some shop listings were imported from OpenStreetMap, a free public map. Those pages carry a small credit line at the bottom of the contact column saying where the location came from. If the details are wrong, the easiest fix on our site is Something wrong here? Suggest a fix, or claiming the shop if it's yours.

Common problems

The hours are wrong or the shop has closed. Tap Something wrong here? Suggest a fix under the contact box and tell us. See Suggesting store fixes and sightings.

Get directions goes to the wrong spot. Directions search by the address on the page. If the address is wrong or missing, suggest a fix with the right one.

The map pin is in the wrong place. Suggest a fix with the correct address, or email support@undergroundaquarium.com. Pins aren't moved automatically when an address changes.

I tapped Sign in and ended up on the feed. Some sign-in links on shop pages don't bring you back afterward. Search for the shop again, or use your browser's back button, and you'll be signed in when you return.

The page says "Page not found". The shop may have been removed from the directory, or the address was mistyped. Search for it on Fish stores.

I don't see a Photos, From the shop or Special hours section. Those only appear once the shop's owner has added something.
